Alex Genadinik delivered a tribute to the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen by taking on one of his classic songs, “Who by Fire“.
Alex Genadinik keeps the charm of the classic original intact, but the artist brings his unique flair to it and gives it an enthusiastic feel that seems like a perfect fit for his personality. He understood the nuances of Leonard’s performance he most loved, and therefore wanted to try and recapture it, but in his own way. Like the original, the song tells of a litany of ways and reasons one might meet their death: fire, water, suicide, drugs, and so on.
“Who by Fire” is a very inspiring song and explicitly relates to Cohen’s Jewish roots, echoing the words of the Unetanneh Tokef prayer and sung as a duet with Janis Ian. In 1973, Leonard Cohen announced he was done with music for good. The same year, in October, war broke out in Israel. The Yom Kippur War would become the bloodiest in Israel’s young history—and Cohen was there to witness it. As the war broke out, he left his home on the Greek island of Hydra to fly into the warzone. Leonard Cohen never said much about why he went to the front. What we know is that in the months that followed, he would write “Who By Fire.”
