‘Stranger Things’ star Finn Wolfhard announces debut solo album ‘Happy Birthday’ with nostalgic single ‘Choose The Latter’

Finn Wolfhard has announced his debut solo album ‘Happy Birthday’ and has shared its nostalgic lead single ‘Choose The Latter’.
Opening with bright and jangly guitars, a bumping bassline and steady drums, ‘Choose The Latter’ is reminiscent of early 2000’s indie pop, with Wolfhard’s distinct voice singing: “If can’t move then I can’t see / I choose the latter / Choose the latter,” in the song’s rousing chorus.
The song’s DIY accompanying music video sees Wolfhard performing the single while on a green-screen roller coaster. You can view it below.
The track is the first taster of the Stranger Things star’s forthcoming debut album ‘Happy Birthday’. Wolfhard is no stranger to the music world as he previously fronted the band Calpurnia and was one half of the pop duo The Aubreys.
A press release describes the album as “a dizzying rush of nine songs” that “grew out of Wolfhard’s personal challenge to pen 50 songs by the end of 2022.” ‘Happy Birthday’ is set for release on June 6 via AWAL and can be pre-ordered here.
Speaking about the album, Wolfhard shared: “I ended up writing a lot of terrible stuff, but a few of those songs I was really proud of went to the Aubreys. I started realising a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood and loneliness. All of that was a part of a bigger puzzle. I knew I wanted to make a record, but I didn’t know with which songs.”

‘Happy Birthday’ track list is:
1. ‘Happy Birthday’
2. ‘Choose The latter’
3. ‘Eat’
4. ‘Objection!’
5. ‘Everytown There’s A Darling’
6. ‘Trailers After Dark’
7. ‘Crown’
8. ‘You’
9. ‘Wait’
He also discussed his acting career – which has seen him star in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things as well as two Ghostbusters reboots – Wolfhard explained that those creative outlets “were a way for me to establish control for myself and a little bit of peace.”
He added: “Music for me has always been something that I can control. And while I’m really grateful for acting and for a long time, it really provided me that peace, it’s just a different thing now that I’m an adult and that it’s a career. I still enjoy it a lot, but when I am by myself and get to play guitar and write a song, it’s a different kind of feeling I’m after.”
Elsewhere, Wolfhard has also announced a string of live dates across North America. Titled the ‘Objection!’ tour, the actor/musician will kick off the run of shows on June 5 at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles before making stops in San Fransisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.
