Slow Coda Interview & new self-titled debut album

Slow-Coda-2

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

Hey, we’re Tavis and Nicholas of Slow Coda. We chose Slow Coda because it rolls off the tongue. We are based out of Los Angeles but neither of us are from here.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

We both have been musicians since high school and just kept with it. It’s mostly inertia at this point.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

We wrote and recorded the demos for the album over the course of a few years, and then finished it up at Gold Diggers Sound in Hollywood, which used to be Slayer’s old rehearsal space. (The band name was still graffitied on the wall in there.) After that, it was mixed and mastered by Eric Gorman in the house that used to be Flying Lotus’ old studio.

What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?

We pull from a lot of sub-genres such as jangle pop, shoegaze, new wave, post-punk, and grunge in order to take our own stab at alternative rock. We don’t conform to any one sound too much, which makes it easier to jump on random shows with other bands, but our sound has been described to us as being dreamy and good for long drives.

Who are your biggest music influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Tavis: I have always been into the weirder alt rock of the late ‘80s & early ‘90s. Bands like Ween and Butthole Surfers. I appreciate bands that don’t feel constrained by their scene / genre and basically do whatever they want.

Nicholas: My musical influences have shifted throughout the years. But I think I would say I grab from different bands: I get my groove from bands like Tower of Power and dreaminess from The Cure and Cocteau Twins.

Plenty of bands we’d love to collaborate with but we hope to someday have Myrone do a guitar solo on one of our songs.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Honestly, it was a big bucket list thing for both os us to finally have an album on vinyl. (Copies are still available on our bandcamp page!!)

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

It took us a long time to find that balance, which is why the album took us nearly 6 years to complete. However, we are both super focused on our music now and looking forward to making things happen in 2022.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Truthfully, we aren’t really in a position to be giving advice to anyone because we’re still figuring it out ourselves. If we get anywhere with it, we’ll let you know!

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be? Thanks!

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

We are in the process of getting a new music video put together, which should be pretty rad once it’s done. It involves a very detailed miniature set and shrinking us down with a green screen.

We’re looking forward to finishing that up and then showing it to everyone. We also have some new songs on the way as well.
