Music Interview: MoonSugar delve on their creative tastes, musical influences & new single ‘Spinning Out’

MoonSugar-3

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

MoonSugar is a Indie Rock trio from St. George Utah. Mickelle plays bass and sings, Hunter plays the drums and Rusty plays the guitar. We met at a corporate job where the three realized they had a love for music and decided to try jamming and something just clicked.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

We all like pretty different styles of music, but we all care deeply about it. There’s also something just so appealing about hanging out with friends and making something together. Rusty was actually the only one trained on his instrument at the time the band formed, but all three of us loved playing and figuring it out.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

We have been trying out playing covers and trying to add a little MoonSugar spice to them, but we felt like it was time to try writing something of our own. The guitar riff kind of fell out of a short acoustic jam session, and when Mickelle and Hunter added their own parts, the song took off. When we were working on it, it wasn’t so much out of a desire to show it off, but we really just wanted to hear what the song would end up sounding like. And we love it!

What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?

Our music is unique because each of us like different types of music and this is a weird blending of all of our ideas. Rusty likes New Wave, Mickelle likes acoustic folk and Hunter likes British Invasion music from the 60’s. When you put that in a pot, it comes out MoonSugar. I guess our genre is Alternative Rock, but that’s such a blanket term it seems like a cop out haha.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

I think we each have a different answer. But I guess I’m just gonna say The Cars, Phoebe Bridgers and of course the Beatles. If we could work with anyone I think it would be Paul McCartney.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Self releasing this first single is a huge milestone for us. It’s all done DIY. We recorded it in Rusty’s garage on second hand instruments on a 8 year old laptop. We’re living proof that a craftsman doesn’t blame his tools.

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

We carve out time at the beginning of the week for our music. Then everything else falls in around it and we seem to get everything done.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Make music you want to listen to. If your band isn’t one of your favorite bands, then you’re missing something.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

Thank you guys for giving us all the support you’ve given. It would be very discouraging if we released our music or played shows to no one, so thank you guys.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

Well, hopefully a tour is in the near future as well as our first album. We don’t want to give out any hard dates, but we’re hopeful that those will both happen before the year is over.
