Music Interview: Jj Brown on his creative tastes, musical influences & new single “Aaliyah”

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
Hey, my name’s Jj Brown. Brown after my skin.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I actually always loved music but didn’t start piano lessons until I was 10, and voice lessons until I was 18. I wouldn’t say it’s my “chosen path”, it’s more like a field of tall grass that I’m like machete-ing through so there’s not much of a path.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
My song is called “Aaliyah” after the late singer and it also features Philly artist “Barry Marrow”. The setting in is a casual night out ,and having high standards but always being open to fun too. Pretty much it’s about being a poetic ho.
What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?
My sound is very r&b chill, alternative and experimental.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
My biggest influences right now are Summer Walker, Puma Blue, and NO1-Noah
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I still definitely think the funnest I’ve had performing were the competitions I did with my band in/around Philly bars. Music is a fun story and it’s such pure memories.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
My lightbulb of music inspiration always has to come somewhat naturally. You need real experiences and memories to write music, so there’s not much “balance” I do. I live, and I write songs. Sometimes my songs are just stories completely though.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
To other aspiring musicians like me – what we want we actually already have, do it because it makes you happy!
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
To any of my fans kon’nichiwa whoreesssss
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
My next song is coming out soon! Another song about being sad horny and hungry!!!
