Music Interview: Cailo on his creative tastes, musical influences & new EP “Locked Down & Out”

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
-Hey! Thanks for having me. I’m Cailo, which is just short for my government name. I’m from the Bay Area, Vallejo specifically, but currently hanging out in the city (San Francisco).
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
-Ever since I was a child, I’ve absolutely loved music. I grew up singing in the church choir and would write little songs. My grandmother would joke around and say I could write a song about anything. I always knew I needed to do something with music or art in general, so I honestly always kind of knew.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
-So my new EP, “Locked Down & Out” is probably the best EP or album I’ve released. I loved making this music because while some of the lyrics are a bit heavy, it has a lighter feel. I know I’m known to get pretty dark at times, so I wanted something bold yet loose and also assertive, yet open. I feel like “Locked Down & Out” really accomplished that and I can say, this EP really and truly feels like “me.” In case you’re wondering, “Fck You” is my favorite song off the EP.
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
-I’d say it’s the way I blend sounds together and mesh genres. It’s like musical gumbo (haha). I create dance, house, deep house, progressive house, electro, tropical house, pop, country-edm, etc. Honestly, I just mesh things together and create the vibe I’m looking for. Also, I love to tell stories through my music. I’ve had quite an eventful time here, so I like to share my experiences.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
-Oh man, I have so many from so many different genres that have affected me. I’d say the biggest influences have been Coldplay, Avicii and Calvin Harris.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
-I’d say I’m most proud of my overall growth as an artist. I’m able to create music now that I only dreamed of creating when I first started making music. Also, I did a set for the #ivoted festival in November. That was a big moment for me.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
-I always carve out time one way or another to ensure I get at least some time to create. This could mean creating music at odd hours or early before work. Sometimes I’ll simply take a day off or take a little “me” time to create in peace.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
-I’d say listen to a wide array of genres and don’t be afraid to experiment, mix and mesh. Music is expression, express yourself…no filter.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
-Thank you so much for all of your support, it truly does mean the world to me. God bless you all. Love and light.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
-What’s next for me is more shows once we are through this pandemic, and of course new music!
