Martin Scorsese has revealed that he no longer goes to the cinema because of the poor etiquette of his fellow cinemagoers.

The legendary director, who is behind huge films including Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and The Irishman, opened up about the poor behaviour he has seen in movie theatres during a conversation with US film critic Peter Travers.

Speaking as part of the latter’s blog, The Travers Take, the film icon reportedly shared that he has been put off going to the cinema in recent times because of the number of people he sees on their phones – something that leaves him too distracted to focus on the film.

“I asked the maestro why he doesn’t see movies in theatres any more and he went all raging bull about audiences who babble on phones during the movie, leave to order snacks and vats of soda, and keep up a noise level loud enough to drown out the actors,” Travers wrote in his update.

He then said that he questioned whether or not Scorsese, who is now aged 82, was not the same in his youth, saying to him: “Come on, Marty. We couldn’t keep our mouths shut when we were kids.”

“His [Scorsese’s] eyes darkened. ‘Yeah, maybe’, he conceded, ‘but when we talked it was always about the movie and the fun we had chewing over the details’,” Travers added.

The Departed director isn’t the only one who has been increasingly frustrated over cinema etiquette in recent times. Earlier this year, there were fierce debates about the topic following the excessive response to one scene in A Minecraft Movie.

The moment in the 2025 film came following the nod to the “chicken jockey”, which sparked a viral trend that saw audiences throw popcorn, shout and generally run riot during screenings. Due to how much momentum it got, some cinemas issued warnings to viewers. Jack Black even surprised fans by turning up to a screening of A Minecraft Movie and asking people not to throw popcorn.

As for other Scorsese news, it was shared earlier today (June 6) that the movie veteran was filmed receiving a call from Robert De Niro wishing him good night, following a recent TikTok trend.

Before then, Apple TV+ announced a five-part documentary on the director, titled Mr Scorsese – which will star De Niro – and the acclaimed filmmaker confirmed he will team up with Leonardo DiCaprio for an action thriller, Carthage Must Be Destroyed.
