James Gunn has spoken about the chances Robert Pattinson’s Batman and David Corenswet’s Superman joining forces in a new film.

The filmmaker opened up about the possibility of both superheroes coming together while at the 2025 edition of Comic-Con this week. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Gunn was asked if the positive response to the latest Superman movie has tempted him to begin work on a sequel.

That film arrived in cinemas earlier this month and marked the latest in the revamped DC Universe. It soon became a box office hit – bringing in $426million (£314million) worldwide gross according to The Numbers.

It also saw David Corenswet take on the iconic role for the first time. Before then, Henry Cavill played the DC character in 2013’s Man Of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice and 2017’s Justice League. He also made a cameo at the end of Black Adam in 2022, before confirming that he would no longer be involved in Gunn’s vision of the DC Universe.

Former Harry Potter and Twilight star Robert Pattinson was the latest actor to have taken on the role of Batman, making his debut alongside Zoë Kravitz with the 2022 movie The Batman.

When asked if there is any chance of seeing the two DCU superheroes come together in a new film, Gunn said he had considered it already, but isn’t ready to commit to the project just yet. “I’ve met him [Pattinson] before, we’ve talked about it before. But it’s not what’s happening right now,” he told ET. “Everything is in flux, so we’ll figure out what we’re doing next.”

Pattinson is due to reprise his role as The Dark Knight in The Batman 2 – the upcoming sequel to the 2022 film, which is due in cinemas in October 2027.

There is also another Batman project on the way, according to GamesRadar, titled The Brave and the Bold. This will feature Batman and the Damian Wayne version of Robin.  Gunn recently told the outlet that the DC team are still in the early stages of the live-action film.

“There’s really no new updates,” he said. “I mean, we’re working on a script. We have a screenwriter who’s hammering away at it. I’m very involved, and so, you know, we’ll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don’t.”

Gunn was at Comic-Con 2025 to promote the second season of Peacemaker, which will be out next month. His next film to be released will be Supergirl, which is set to arrive in cinemas in 2026.

The latest Superman film was given a three-star review from NME and praised as putting “some pep” back into the long-running franchise.

“To give Gunn his due, he crafts a world that’s as close to the DC Comics Superman that we’ve ever seen, with characters like the shapeshifting Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) adding real texture. It’s a promising start-point to his plans for the DC Universe,” it read.

“And while the good-versus-evil plot does little to push the envelope, the idea of Superman being an alien peacekeeper is surely going to stir up political controversies back in Gunn’s MAGA-homeland. Mainly, though, just give us more Krypto – this canine really is super.”
