Foo Fighters mark 30th anniversary with new single ‘Today’s Song’ as Dave Grohl thanks past members
Foo Fighters have celebrated their 30th anniversary as a band by sharing new single ‘Today’s Song’. Check it out below along with a heartfelt message from Dave Grohl.
The US rock giants have spent recent weeks sharing archive material across social media to mark three decades since their formation and debut album in the wake of the demise of Grohl’s past band Nirvana with the death of Kurt Cobain. This included sharing their short, brutal cover of Minor Threat’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Hear It‘, which featured instrumentals recorded 30 years ago and fresh vocals from the frontman.
Now, they’re dropped a one-off single in the form of traditional Foos arena euphoria ‘Today’s Song’ – which sees Grohl in a reflective mood as he sings: “You know that nothing can prepare you, don’t let this cruel world compare you“. He shared the track with a message looking back on his years with the band and touching on the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022.
“Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak,” said the frontman. “Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
He also went on to comment on previous members – including the often better former drummer William Goldsmith and recently sacked sticksman Josh Freese.
“It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years,” he went on. “Thank you, gentlemen.”
“And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivalled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”

This comes as Foo Fighters are gearing up for a headline performance at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix concerts and shows in Jakarta and Japan as well as topping the bill at Mexico’s Corona Capital. These will be their first gigs since sacking Freese and since they reportedly cancelled European festival shows in the wake of 2024’s controversial news that Grohl had “recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage”.
Foo Fighters’ last album was the acclaimed and reflective ‘But Here We Are‘ in 2023, which tackled Grohl’s feelings of grief after the loss of Hawkins and his mother.
