In the ’60s, R&B meant rhythm and blues, the upbeat country-blues hybrid replacing the parochial rockabilly sound. By the ’90s, the term was associated with mainly girl groups standing on the shoulders of the giants of soul, mixing that sound up with more modern dance-pop. Moody Bank$’ take on the label is different again, a more sophisticated yet wonderfully genre-free and freewheeling sound taking in soul, dance, pop, and more urban grooves. What does this prove? Perhaps only that change is inevitable, evolution constant.

Her latest project, Feeling Colors, sits at the sharp end of a line that runs through all of the above, an innovative and sophisticated blend of skittering urban beats and soulful vibes, chilled dance grooves, and accessible pop moves. Musically it tips its hat to many points in the past, but whilst it does so, it has its eyes fixed firmly on the future.

Labels and genres might not mean anything these days, but perhaps that is for the best. Without them, artists are free to mix up their influences, take inspiration from all over the musical map, and make music that wilfully ignores rules and musical boundaries, tribal allegiances, and expectations. It is safe to say that Feeling Colors is an EP that could only have been made in the modern age. Not only is it the sound of now but also the sound of the future, which is always an exciting prospect.
