The Last Of Us

28 Days Later writer Alex Garland has said that The Last Of Us was “better” than his film, in a conversation with its creator Neil Druckmann.

The second season of the post-apocalyptic show is arriving on April 13, with Druckmann serving as show runner, having co-created the game it is based on. He has spoken previously about the influence of 28 Days Later on the PlayStation hit, and as Garland returns for sequel 28 Years Later he has offered his own compliment.

In an episode of Sony’s Creator To Creator series, Garland told Druckmann: “Let me say this: The Last of Us is better than 28 Days (Later)… or at least the writing is. I’m not going to talk about directing, that would be a silly thing. So not that”.

He continued: “I know what 28 Days is, I know what I did. I know what that process was. The thing about The Last of Us, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so much more sophisticated and moving. It was moving. I’m not dissing 28 Days, I’m very proud of it. It’s a nice part of my life. But seriously, The Last of Us is on another level – so yeah, of course I was influenced by it”.

He would go on to expand on how the show inspired his writing process for the film’s sequel. “It was nice for me to feel like someone’s saying ‘raise your game’” he said.

28 Years Later is in cinemas from June 20, with a follow up film, The Bone Temple, scheduled for January 16 2026. The first preview of the film would go on to become the most watched horror trailer of 2024, currently standing at over 22million views on YouTube.

Despite speculation, it was recently confirmed that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy won’t return for the sequel after all.
