Los Angeles-based music producer, musician, and multi-talented artist Butter is back with his latest project, the “If It’s Up” EP. This four-track EP is set to project Butter to the upper echelons of musical artistry with an irresistible blend of smooth Jazz inflections, atmospherically mellow beats, and a vast array of chipper synths. It’s a treat for the ears, unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the lo-fi music space.

“If It’s Up” results from Butter’s years of toiling and honing his artistic craft. It’s a culmination of his sweet and sour experiences, all laden with emotional and musical gravitas. Butter’s musical expertise shines through in every single arrangement. Whether through the warm tones of tracks like “Only Mendoza” or the more calm, understated vibe of “Pacific Top Down,” the quality and thought to seep through.

The EP opens with “Crown Heights,” a beautifully arranged tune that gently lulls the listener into a trance-like state of serenity. With atmospheric synths and an understated rhythm, it slowly builds upon itself, creating a relaxed mood. Butter carefully ensures this atmosphere doesn’t break, even when introducing new aspects and ideas into the arrangement.

Following that, we have the second track, “Only Mendoza.” Serving as a more bright and cheery-sounding second track, “Only Mendoza” instead conveys a sense of peacefulness. Gone are the darker overtones, replaced with the sweet twang of Spanish guitars. The arrangement remains brisk but maintains steady composure, avoiding any rush.

“Bloodline,” the third EP track, reveals a smoother, classical take on the lo-fi genre. It’s a fascinating brisk, sweet track, but it’s packed with hooks. Within its short runtime, it manages to grab the listener’s attention and stay there. A piano slowly ascends and descends, ringing in the song’s complex sound and themes. An inspired tune for the third song of the EP, as it brings the listener into a different head space.

Closing the project is the track “Pacific Top Down,” another calm and collected tune that infuses mellow vibes with an almost tropical atmosphere. It’s a surprisingly chill way to close out the EP, but one that’s nonetheless effective. The music subconsciously envelopes you as you relax, transporting you to a different plane of blissful joy. It’s a trip and a half that you aren’t want to miss out on.

Butter’s many musical influences permeate the record, showcasing his skill and talent at transforming basic concepts into transcendental experiences. These shifts are organic, slowly lulling the listener into a sense of calm before changing things in delightful ways.

The first single off of the “If It’s Up” EP, “Bloodline,” will release on the 10th of May, 2023, hitting listeners with its soft but frantic piano keys and overtones. If you’re an avid fan of lo-fi music, then you don’t want to miss out on this monumental release!
