CYB3RTERRA Interview & their new EP titled “Doll House”

CYB3RTERRA-2

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

Thank you for having me and I go by CYB3RTERRA, I was born in LA and raised in Austin, TX for a majority of my life. The meaning behind CYB3RTERRA is that a lot of my existence has been revolved around the internet from an early age to now. Initially when I was brainstorming the name, I wanted it to initially be CYB3RTERROR. I have always been fascinated by the fictional character Terra from Teen Titans and sometimes my music comes from a feminine place so I changed it to CYB3RTERRA.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

I got into music because of my father being my main inspiration. Watching him record, going to his band practices and shows sparked my interest in becoming a musician. It didn’t start immediately though, it wasn’t till I was about 12 years old I picked up my first instrument and tried to form a band with my friends.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

My new EP titled “Doll House” is a project I started working on during the middle of the pandemic, which is out now ready for the world to hear. I had already put an EP out prior to this one at the very beginning of the pandemic called “Network Error” and that one was in the recording phase late 2019.

Doll House is my project that I label as “Post-Genre”, everything prior to this EP has basically been a build up to this point. I like to call this project my “features project”. You will find people like London Hudson (Slash’s Son and drummer of S8NT ELEKTRIC), Sybyr and Eric North (from Anti-World), IC3PEAK, Virus and Antidote (Producer for Bones and Chris Travis), and SpaceGhostPurrp (Raider Klan) all over this record. The title “Doll House” is a play on phrase from the saying “Ignorance is Bliss”. The title comes from the mind of a child thinking everything is perfect in the Doll House world so I made sure my music and song topics weren’t a reflection of that at all.

What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?

What makes my music unique is the fact that I am both inspired and not afraid to challenge myself or my listeners ears by meshing genres together. I never like to put out a new project that sounds like my last one. As soon as I heard the term “Post-Genre” 2 years ago, I knew that was the best way to describe my sound. Everything from DeathCore, Black Metal, Punk Rock, Post-Punk, Grunge, Trap and Electronic are regular sounds you will find in my music.

Who are your biggest music influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

It’s really hard for me to pick out my influences for I have so many. If I had to narrow it down I would probably pick A$AP Rocky, Bjork, Mayhem, DarkThrone, Alice in Chains, SoundGarden, Prince, Aphex Twin, Machine Girl, H09909, Rina Sawayama and Dorian Electra.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

I’m the most proud of me getting the opportunity to work with my peers who inspire me (that are all over this new EP), opening up for artists that inspire me, being my own booking/touring agent and doing everything DIY from the start and knowing my success came from that.

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

My son Londonn was born this past summer so being able to balance my time with him and the rest of our family is first and foremost. I try to keep the consistency of putting out music every couple of months so it gives my audience enough time to digest my most recent release. I always find some way to devote time to my music even if it’s for a few hours a week. I’m hoping to get back in the routine of doing shows in 2022 since the world is opening music venues up again.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

If you’re starting off with a small audience, appreciate that handful of people who are supporting you. Devote your energy to them because it means a lot to both parties. You will eventually get more listeners just keep pushing out original content and network with new people. I can’t stress the importance of getting over the fear of rejection.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

If you feel like no one is helping you get to where you want to be, make your own wave of opportunities and go the DIY route. I have had to be my own Graphic Designer, Merch Designer, Music Engineer, Booking Agent, Tour Manager, Music Publisher and Promoter since I have started my journey as a musician. Anyone can do it if you really want it that bad.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

I’m still working on the title for my next EP but I have already started the recording process. It will be 6 tracks that will have a mesh of Black Metal, Classical and Japanese Folk music.
