Music Interview: Dvme delves on his creative tastes, musical influences & new single ‘Deep End’ from upcoming EP ‘Thank You For The Pain’

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
Hello my ñame is Damon but I go by Dvme pronounced Dame. I replaced the a with a v cause I love it visually and it’s supposed to represent an upside a. I’m a local artist from Detroit, MI born and raised there.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I have always loved music since I could walk. I grew up watching all the old Disney classics from Hercules, Lion King, Mulan, Anastasia, Aristocats, Aladdin etc. These movies made me fall in love with music and as I got older I couldn’t wait to let out my own voice. In middle school through high school I went to a performing arts school and continuously signed up to be in choir. After graduating in 2015 I decided to visit a vocal coach and decided to pursue a solo career. Every since 2018 I’ve been creating my own music and recording and creating as an artist.
Tell us about your new music?
I have the second single coming from the highly anticipated EP “Thank You For The Pain”, the title of this single is “Deep End” and in this single I go through the motions of realizing this is the end of a story and I hate the way it’s ending. I’m dealing with how I wish things would’ve gone and no matter what I didn’t see this ending this way. The beat I received from Quincy Thompson was everything and I appreciate him for bringing my lyrics to life cause this was a different sound for me.
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
My music is unique because it tells MY story. It’s really relatable but the way I sing it, the way I tell it is unique and personal to me. I would describe it as story-telling instead of choosing a specific genre. I could say the basic RnB or Neo-Soul but those genres are storytelling genres and I also never want to confine myself to a box. I just want to make what comes to me.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
I have a few artists I’m inspired by, my top 3 I would have to say are Drake, just because he started an era of rap/singing, Kehlani because she has such a beautiful pen and beautiful delivery and voice of her ideas. I’ve followed her from the very beginning and to watch her grow is the same success I believe I can achieve for myself. Lastly I’d have to say SZA because her delivery and lyricism is just top tier. Sza to me can say whatever she wants and she can make it sound beautiful whether she’s like telling you, you ain’t shit it will sound like a masterpiece. If that makes sense. I would love to collaborate with Kehlani, Drake, Jhené Aiko, Summer Walker and just so many more but that’s all I could think of at the moment.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I think performing in my hometown was probably the best thing so far that could’ve happened to me. Just to have people from my city rocking to my music and see that on a stage was just an entire experience I wouldn’t trade for the world. At the famous Filmore Theatre I opened up for K.Michelle and I still can’t believe that happened. The entire approach and experience was ethereal and I loved every moment.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
I’m still in the process of finding the balance. I’m currently a nurse, student and a caregiver. It’s a lot and sometimes it’s overwhelming but I think I make the right decisions at the right time so I just follow my intuition and do what’s best for me and what will make me happy and bring me success.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
To aspiring musicians I would tell them, to go out and just do it, don’t get clouded by judgement or your thoughts of what anyone will think. Do the things you wanna do and deal with the repercussions later or the benefits later. If you don’t do it you’ll live with that forever and that’s worse than what anyone can say about it after you do it!
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
I want to tell my OG fans I truly appreciate and love them for getting me this far, my new fans welcome to DvmeGvng and I hope you love it here cause I love you and I hope to gain more along the way.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
As far as what’s next the release of my EP “Thank You For The Pain” coming out before summer and I just finished up this pop song and I’m ready to get the summer lit with it, I’m ready to leave this chapter of my life behind me and grow from the knowledge I’ve gained from it. Ready to be in the studio almost every week and just get back to writing and singing FULL-TIME.
