Music Interview: Birthpush delves on his creative tastes, musical influences & new single “sh!t like that”

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
What’s good, dawg? This is Birthpush. Everyone asks about the name, but I really can’t help you there. You get what you get…like, you won’t forget it and you definitely won’t have trouble finding me on Spotify.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I started as a DJ. I did school dances, fundraisers, stuff like that. I liked being in control of the aux, really. One thing led to another and I started writing my own songs. I think the first song I wrote was a Trophies-type beat with some rap lyrics. I did the metal band thing for a while in high school and while I was in college I did more producing and mixing for other artists down in Florida.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
I wrote the chorus to SH!T LIKE THAT first, then the first two verses. It was just a kind of fantasy about being cancelled. I mean, to me, the whole idea of “cancelling” is ridiculous, but you have to admit it would be amazing getting cancelled. Knowing that you were that important to that many people. I sent the beat off to Big Meeg and Rogie and they killed it with their own expansion on what I started. They absolutely killed it. Two of the best features in the game.
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
I have trouble staying in one genre. I’ve heard it called Alt-Pop or Alt-Rap? It’s whatever I’m feeling. It’s no deeper than that, really.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
That’s another question I low-key hate to try to answer. If I try to list even a couple names, I’d miss somebody important. But a collab? Travis Barker. No questions asked.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I really like it when people repost my stuff. Every few songs I make, when a true crowd pleaser hits, I’ll get a bunch of reposts and it makes me happy. That’s the extent of my influence now, though. It’ll be millions one day. You’ll see.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
Music is work. It isn’t “work” in the sense that I feel like a slave to it, but it is my work and it’s the way I spend my energy. My girlfriend and my friends know that, so it isn’t sus to be recording and mixing all day until the crack of dawn and then I’m clocking back in the next afternoon. If I dig the groove, I’m in the studio or I’m probably out thinking about it or waiting on a feature.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Don’t post up a black screen on some “stepping out of the game for a while” BS when you don’t even have a thousand Instagram followers. No one cares. Get back to work.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
I apologize in advance for changing up my sound. It’s bound to happen. Don’t get comfortable.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
I’ve been dropping a song a week, and that seems to be the plan for the foreseeable future. Lots of new great artists I’m working with. Keep an eye out on Mondays.
