Music Interview: Nate delves on his musical tastes, musical influences & new single “Lately”

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
My artist name is Nate, a nickname from my birth name.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
Music is my first love; my mom always recalls me turning on the radio player and dancing to it before I could even walk. Music is something I can’t live without because of the way it makes me feel when creating and listening to it. Also, I’m a huge nerd for all kinds of soul and hip-hop music from decades ago. I love hearing how different sounds, instruments, and vocals can come together to make beautiful songs. I made my first song at around age 9, and at 15, I started writing and creating songs knowing I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
My song ‘Lately’ is a mellow vibe R&B/soul song produced by myself. The song describes a person who loves someone, but can’t stand loving that person anymore which explains the line in the hook, “I’m running out of heart”. This was inspired from a breakup I went through when I couldn’t stop loving the girl who left me and I kept trying to get her back, but I was getting the run around and felt like I was being played with and manipulated.
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
I feel like my voice makes my music unique the most. I can’t think of a male singer with a voice sounding similar to mine. Also, the production is very deep and has sad mellow vibes to it which isn’t common now in such a fast-paced market where rap is taking over.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
My biggest music influences would have to be Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Anderson Paak., and Kanye West. They all make great music that makes me feel like I’m not here and that’s the feeling I want to give people from my music.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
Last year, i used a different artist name, but got the opportunity to perform in an auditorium with over 1000 people watching and they really enjoyed it and I received good feedback afterwards.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
Right now I’m a college student, but I don’t have to work this semester which gives me time to write, practice vocal exercises, and produce more songs.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Don’t ever give up, work hard in perfecting your craft, and if people are being negative that means they see your potential and are scared you will achieve your dreams.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
I love you all for supporting and believing in me and hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the music I have to offer!
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
As of now, I am only releasing singles to gain more awareness and an audience. I’m always working on an album, but the fans decide when that will come out.
