Music Interview: KILBRIDE delves on his creative tastes, musical influences & new EP “Falling…”

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.

Hi Xttrawave audience! My name is Kilbride and that’s my last name. I decided to use my last name per the suggestion from a friend saying it would be “badass”. So, basically I had to haha. I’m from Prince Edward Island, Canada. A small island on the East Coast of Canada and the smallest province. We don’t have a big rap/hip-hop scene here, but there are few and far between from my experience. Most of my live shows were in Nova Scotia though, which is about the same. Both great places, but needs a revolution when it comes to rap that’s for sure.

What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?

I’ve been playing music since I was 6 years old. It has always been a part of my life and I feel I have always known it was the path I was going to take in my life. I have always wanted to have a back-up plan though, mainly due to social pressures paired with anxiety, so I therefore went to university first. While I was there though I realized that I wanted to give this a try and it quickly became my future goal/path to make this a living.

Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?

The new EP “Falling…” is a lofi, emo rap vibe. I wanted to try to create a sound with minimal equipment compared to my previous work. I also wanted to hone in on my roots when I started to rap, which was mainly over lofi or boom bap style beats. Due to my moods as of late, I decided to go with the lofi sound because it fit with the emotional, acoustic type vibe I wanted, but also with some fun right at the end. It is short and sweet, but gives you a taste of what is to come.

What makes your music unique? And how would you describe it?

What makes my music unique is my voice and vocabulary I think. I personally believe not many have a voice like me. I still am not sure if I have fully found that sound for my voice and it is ever-changing, which I believe makes it much more unique in that way. Also my vocabulary. I like to use different types of phrasing or wordplay compared to other rappers/artists these days. I love to take influence from many areas, but always add my own twist. So, I may use slang that is popular, but use it in an interesting way or just make up my own shit and say fuck it, this is a word now… mainly because it fits haha.

Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Wow, biggest music influences. That’s a hard one. I’ll give ya like 5 bands and 5 artists cause damn. Bands: Coheed & Cambria, Pierce the Veil, The Used, Metallica, Bullet for My Valentine. Artists: Juice Wrld, XXXTentacion, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky. And honestly, thinking of it now, I’d love to collaborate with Bert McCracken of The Used. He is a phenomenal singer and song-writer. That would be dope.

Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

The best moment in my music career so far has been working with Baby Goth or making my first music video. Those were both dope as hell.

How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?

It is tough sometimes, but mainly just as I balance everything… in a chaotic whirl of nonsense and whimsical efforts that ultimately lead to something I cannot fully understand. So, pretty normally.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Keep going. That is all.

If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?

I love you all. You are what has got me to this point and beyond this point. I could not do this without any of you. So, much luv.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?

What’s next for me? I have a few projects on the way. I can’t speak much, but our collective 666 has some works on the way and I have plans to release at least another EP and an album before the year ends. Look forward to more of me.
