Music Interview: Mel Maryns delves on her creative tastes, musical influences & new music

Great to have you on Xttrawave. Please, introduce yourself.
Hi, thank you for having me. I’m Mel Maryns, I’m 17 years old and I live in Cork, Ireland.
What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I’ve been singing since I was a little kid, my dad used to play guitar and there was always music in the house, we used to always sing together and I always had this really good feeling when I used to sing as if that was my destiny. Knowing that, I started writing my own original songs, I learned how to play the piano by teaching myself and watching videos on YouTube and after a while I started singing on the streets and I just knew that singing was my passion and it felt like it was meant to be.
Tell us about your new music? And what’s the story behind it?
That’s a good question. So, I’ve been working on a lot of singles at the moment, and every single one of my songs are based on real life stories that I’ve experienced. And I just want to share my music with the world and tell my story and inspire people!
What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
I think that what makes my music unique is that it’s genuinely just me, just who I am, it’s how I want it to sound like and I think being who you are makes it special. I would describe my music as……Mel Maryns. My music has that “pop” rock style. I love to rock out. My music is like my brain, my feelings, so everything that I feel I put it into lyrics and melodies. I love to write my own music.
Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
My biggest musical influencers are Guns and Roses, Skid Row, Evanescence, Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande.
I’d love to collaborate with Shawn Mendes one day! I think he’s really awesome and talented and he inspires me so much.
Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
I think the best moment in my musical career so far was when I heard my song “Get Away” play on the radio for the first time! It was one of the best feelings in the world, I was like “MOM I’M ON THE RADIO”. I was so happy! It was one of those moments that you will never forget.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
It’s not that hard to balance my music with my family as we are always singing, creating and composing. I’m so lucky to have parents that support me and are always helping me to achieve my dreams!
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
One thing I know for sure, it might sound cliché but it’s the truth “never give up”
You have to work hard to achieve your dreams. Practice all the time, practice makes perfect. I believe in you. You can do this. Never give up.
If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
Thank you, for everything, for always supporting me and being with me in this journey.
I feel like we are a family and I’m so grateful for everyone who interacts with me on my social medias, who sends me messages, and gives me some of their time to watch my videos, comment and share it means the world to me. I wish I could reply to each one of them because they deserve it! I love you guys from the bottom of my heart, you guys are the reason why I keep going and why keep making music. You are my inspiration.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
I have some exciting news… I’m planning on releasing a new single every month till the end of the year. It’s a challenge, but I know I’ll make it! I can’t wait for everyone to hear my music. And hopefully my next move will be making an album.
